Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program at UPMC

The University of Pittsburgh and the UPMC Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Division partnership has a long tradition of training the future leaders of rheumatology for careers in academic medicine, industry, and clinical practice.

The focus of the program is to best prepare each fellow for their personal career track.

All fellows complete a standard track for their first year and choose a focus for their second year:

Clinician Track

Post-graduation Goal: Full-time clinical practice

Program schedule enrichments

  • Second year continuity clinic in a community-based practice.
  • Tele-Rheumatology Rotation.
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Clinics at the VA Pittsburgh Health System and Falk Clinic.
  • Support for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Certification via Ultrasound School of North.
    American Rheumatologists (USSONAR).

Educational enrichments

  • Business of Rheumatology Lecture Series.
  • Access to basic business training materials to personalize each trainee’s educational path.
  • Flexibility to take business courses at a local school during the second year.

Clinician Educator Track

Post-graduation Goal: Clinical education and practice in an academic setting

Program schedule enrichments

  • Second year continuity clinic in a clinic with high volume of rotating residents.
  • Support for Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Pittsburgh Institute.
    for Clinical Research Education (ICRE).
  • Medical student teaching in workshops and on the floors.

Educational enrichments

  • Mentor-mentee relationship with clinician educators in the Department of Medicine and within the division.
  • Practicum in rheumatology medical education in resident run clinic at UPMC Mercy.

Research Track

Post-graduation Goal: Physician Scientist

Program schedule enrichments

  • Dedicated research time in second year.
  • Additional third year focused on research is possible.
  • T32 (Immunology and Immunopathology) in third year of fellowship (competitive application).

Educational enrichments

  • Mentored research opportunities with independent investigators in rheumatology or related field (immunology, nephrology, dermatology, etc.).
  • Clinical research track fellows may pursue master’s in clinical research or master’s in public health.
