What To Expect At Your Spine Care Visit

Our spine experts will create a comprehensive plan to treat your condition and help to reduce your symptoms.

Before Your Visit

To prepare for your visit, you will be asked to provide:

  • Insurance information.
  • Name, address, and contact phone number.
  • Referral, if required by your health insurance company.
  • Relevant medical records and test results.

If your primary care doctor or another doctor refers you for spine care at UPMC, they can provide your test results and medical records to our team.

During Your Visit

When you arrive for your first appointment, you will meet with a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. They will ask about your medical history and perform an exam.

Your care team may:

  • Order imaging or other tests to learn more about your condition.
  • Prescribe or recommend medication to help manage your symptoms.
  • Provide in-office care.
  • Provide instructions for treating your condition at home.
  • Refer you to another care provider, such as a physical therapist.
  • Schedule a procedure in the office or the hospital.

After our experts have your test results, health records, and information from your exam, they will diagnose your condition. They will also explain your treatment options based on how long you have experienced symptoms, your condition, and your health history.

Together, you and your care team will design and agree on a care plan.

After Your Visit

Our team will schedule follow-up appointments to check how your treatment is working.

You should contact our office if:

  • You have any other concerns about your condition.
  • You have questions about your treatment plan or medications.
  • Your symptoms get worse or do not improve as expected.
