UPMC offers a wide range of resources to support the physical, emotional, social, and mental health of transplant candidates, recipients, living donors, care partners, and family members.
Transplant Support Groups
At UPMC, we understand that the transplant journey is life-changing — for you, as well as your family members and care partners. It's crucial for everyone involved in the transplant process to have a strong support system.
Transplant support groups can help reduce stress for transplant candidates/recipients and those who are caring for them.
Support groups allow people on this journey to:
- Get information from others who are going down the same medical path.
- Hear the transplant stories and experiences of other patients.
- Validate their emotions and concerns.
Beginning with the time of your organ transplant evaluation, your transplant coordinator will inform you about the support groups and other services we offer at UPMC.
Types of transplant support groups
We offer several types of transplant support groups, including:
- Care partner support — Groups for loved ones who are caring for a transplant candidate/recipient.
- Pretransplant support — Groups for people in the evaluation and waiting stages of their transplant journey.
- Posttransplant support — Groups for people who are recovering after transplant surgery, coping with the physical, emotional, financial, and social aspects of having a transplant, and readjusting to life after surgery.
