Education and Training at the Wolff Center

The Wolff Center partners with content experts across the UPMC system to provide our staff with:

  • Hands-on, up-to-date education on a range of clinical topics.
  • Tools and training  that support our mission of safe, quality patient care.

We formed the Wolff Learning Academy (WLA) to meet the broad learning needs around:

  • Quality improvement (QI).
  • Patient safety and quality outcomes.
  • Health care regulations.
  • Operational excellence.

Improving Quality Across UPMC

We lead UPMC health system staff at all levels and medical fields through the QI process.

WLA provides UPMC staff with key QI tools and concepts through:

  • A range of online on-demand courses.
  • A number of interactive workshops.
  • Two yearly structured QI training programs.

Structured QI training

WLA offers training twice a year for leaders across UPMC who commit to QI and want to:

  • Deepen their knowledge and skills.
  • Lead local and system-wide projects to meet UPMC’s QI goals and improve outcomes.

These programs blend QI methods with hands-on training, peer engagement, and coaching.

They allow staff to work on real-world strategic projects that drive QI across UPMC.

Helping Nurses Learn and Grow

The Wolff Center partners with UPMC’s Center for Nursing Excellence (CNE) to standardize and align nursing education and career growth.

Our training team and the CNE design innovative plans to improve nursing:

  • Onboarding to ease their transition from school to practice.
  • Competency that combines their knowledge, judgement, skills, values, and attitude.
  • Preceptor support.
  • Continued career development through specialty training and the My Nursing Career Ladder.

The Wolff Center team also works with other nursing support services to train and create career ladders for non-nursing services.

We help make sure our nurses have UPMC’s full support across the system throughout their nursing journey with us.
