UPMC in central Pa. is committed to improving the quality of care for patients with congestive heart failure through the use of clinical practice guidelines. These guidelines, approved by our interdisciplinary team, promote evidence-based practice to reduce complications, mortality, length of stay and hospital readmissions.

Our Heart Failure Program is recognized as an Advanced Heart Failure Program via The Joint Commission's Disease Specific Certification program.
Our Heart Failure program participates in the American Heart Association's Get with the Guideline's (GWTG) program. Since 2014, UPMC in central Pa. has received the GWTG Gold Plus Award. This award recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated at least 85% compliance with the five GWTG-Heart Failure Achievement Measures for twenty four consecutive months or more. Since 2017, UPMC in central Pa. also received the target award by meeting an additional 5 measures. In 2019, in it's first year participating, UPMC Carlisle obtained Silver Plus Target.
Program data is reviewed concurrently at the patient, unit, hospital and system levels. Based on careful analysis, action plans are developed to impact positive patient and family outcomes.
