The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship Program was established in 2015 and is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for training Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in Neonatology. Our goal is to train these individuals in the medical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and procedures in neonatal critical care and newborn medicine that will allow them to provide world class clinical care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our graduates will be prepared to help meet the ongoing demand for mid-level providers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship Program curriculum is designed to develop the skills required for competent neonatal critical care including delivery room management, neonatal procedures, and the principles of neonatal management and care. The APP neonatal fellows are employed, paid learners with the goal to provide the fundamental knowledge, critical thinking skills, and technical skills to make appropriate clinical decisions. APP neonatal fellows are being trained as advanced practice providers and not independent practitioners/neonatologists.
The PA fellow will potentially rotate through 3 sites based upon 2 primary location tracts. The program consists of 2 primary location tracts and applicants may choose to apply to a single or both locations at time of application.
Up to two PA fellows will be based primarily in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital NICU (level III NICU) and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh NICU (level IV NICU). Up to one PA fellow will be based primarily in Erie, Pennsylvania at UPMC Hamot NICU (level III NICU) with additional clinical rotations at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital NICU and UPMC Children’s NICU (level IV NICU).
The PA fellows for all locations will have coordinated orientation, didactic education as well as procedural training and simulation throughout the course of the program. The PA fellow will be assigned preceptors at each site during their clinical rotations and build their patient load and complexity throughout the fellowship with experience. Throughout the NICU clinical sites exposure will include delivery room management, well-baby nursery, management of medical and surgical NICU patients as well as exposure to specialized neonatal populations such as cardiac and ECMO patients. The PA fellow will also have clinical rotation time for elective rotations in areas of interest such as transport medicine, ER medicine, CICU, or supportive care medicine.
Upon completion of the UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship, successful graduates will maintain Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider level positions throughout UPMC.
