Are you a cancer patient who has trouble sleeping? Do you suffer from fatigue? You may be eligible to participate in a local research study.
UPMC Hamot and Mercyhurst University are partnering to explore using exercise as a treatment for fatigue and insomnia in cancer patients. If you are a cancer patient who is at least 18 years old, does not have heart disease or diabetes, and is able to exercise at a moderate intensity, you might be a candidate for this study.
Joining the study involves attending a meeting to determine eligibility and then being randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. One group will do a brisk walking program for 12 weeks, the second group will do yoga for 12 weeks, and the third will continue standard care with their doctors. Classes will be held two to three times per week. Participants are also required to complete questionnaires based on their experiences. Classes will be held at either Mercyhurst University (501 East 38th St., Erie, Pa.) or the LECOM Medical Fitness and Wellness Center (5401 Peach St., Erie, Pa.). The programs are free and participants will receive $25 for travel expenses.
