​Orthopaedic Surgery at UPMC Horizon

UPMC Horizon takes great pride in its comprehensive orthopaedic surgery program. Built on the expertise of its board-certified orthopaedic surgeons, who have more than 200 years of combined experience among them, UPMC Horizon's orthopaedic surgery program guides its patients through the entire process, from preoperative testing and education to postoperative care and rehabilitation.

Before Surgery

Before undergoing orthopaedic surgery, patients may need to have a medical clearance with their family doctor and an evaluation with the orthopaedic surgeon. They will also have a telephone consultation with preoperative testing nurse.

Total Joint Education Class

Patients who have joint replacement surgery at UPMC Horizon are encouraged to attend our Total Joint Education Class, which may be coordinated with your preoperative testing. Many questions regarding planning for your surgery, learning about expectations during your hospital stay, and preparing for your recovery at home are answered during the class.

Topics covered during the Total Joint Education Class:

  • Exercises to strengthen lower extremities
  • Preoperative testing and what will happen the day of surgery
  • Typical length of hospital stay
  • Equipment used both in the hospital and at home to regain use of limbs and perform daily living activities
  • Pain management
  • What to bring to the hospital
  • Getting the best results from surgery
  • Any additional questions or concerns about the joint replacement surgery process
  • Discharge planning

After Surgery

After surgery, patients have access to physical therapy and rehabilitation programs, including outpatient physical therapy at UPMC Centers for Rehab Services. In addition, the UPMC Horizon Pain Management Center offers a variety of pain-control options.
