As nurses at UPMC Passavant, we are leading the transformation of our nursing practice through evidence-based practice, research, and innovation while fostering a healthy professional practice environment with our collaborative partners. We are dedicated to ensuring a compassionate patient- and family-centered experience, with a focus on safety and quality.
Our Nursing Education staff leads new nurses through a comprehensive Nursing Residency Program. The goal of the Nursing Residency program is to develop competence and confidence in the new nurse throughout the first year of nursing practice. We then urge experienced nurses to advance through the My Nursing Career (MNC) Development Program. MNC rewards and salutes nurses for their contributions and professional growth.
We consider our professional staff nurses to be leaders. Our Shared Leadership Structure supports inter-professional collaboration and effective communication to make safe, quality patient care decisions. The outcome of shared leadership is greater accountability for practice, greater nurse satisfaction, improved clinical outcomes and greater efficiency.
Our nurses participate in hospital-wide decisions through the following councils:

Magnet® recognition reflects excellence in nursing professionalism, teamwork, and outcomes in patient care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence.
Approximately 10% of all U.S. hospitals have achieved Magnet designation. UPMC Passavant was designated as a Magnet organization in 2017 and 2022 by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®.

Shared Leadership Councils at UPMC Passavant
Nursing leaders are always seeking ways to improve the work setting in their organizations. Using a shared leadership model supports a journey to promote a culture of nursing excellence.
Our shared leadership structure is a way to strengthen nursing practices representing our Professional Practice Model (PPM). The main goal of shared leadership is to support nursing's desire to be in control over their practice setting. Some of the recent accomplishments of our councils include:
- The Professional Practice Council developed “sister-unit guidelines” for nursing departments to reduce the need for clinical nurses to be reassigned across numerous nursing departments.
- The Evidence-Based Quality and Research Council presented its annual “Jingle & Mingle” event which gave senior level nurses on the career ladder the opportunity to present posters outlining their nursing projects.
