In 2024, UPMC Shadyside developed a plan to commission site-specific artwork as part of our first-floor renovations. The plan focused on engaging Pittsburgh artists to create artwork that creates a connection to the community, provides a positive distraction, and sparks curiosity. An art committee that included hospital leadership, Shadyside Hospital Foundation representatives, community members, and UPMC staff approved locations and participated in artist selection meetings.
The first three artworks were completed in 2025. While each artwork is aesthetically distinct, conceptual threads connect the projects. The artworks at the entry locations were inspired by the hospital’s gardens. The suspended sculptures bring colorful references to nature indoors. In one corridor, a historic plaque display is complemented by three paintings that explore themes of community engagement and patient care over time.
Together, they create a welcoming, meaningful place grounded in site and community.
