UPMC Content 3
Internal medicine physicians serve as primary care physicians for adult patients. They provide a wide range of nonsurgical health care services, including physical examinations, preventive screenings and immunizations, urgent care for medical conditions, and referrals to surgical specialists when appropriate.

Internal medicine generally falls into these nine recognized subspecialties: cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, oncology, gastroenterology, pulmonary, hematology, rheumatology, and infectious disease.
