Mammography Test Preparation at UPMC in South Central Pa.

Mammography uses a low-dose digital X-ray to provide high-contrast, high-resolution images of breast tissue. As part of our commitment to providing high-quality imaging care, our caring staff will make your procedure as relaxed and stress-free as possible.

The following information will help you prepare for your mammogram:

Before Your Mammogram

You will be asked not to wear deodorant under your arms or powder/lotion on your chest, as these substances can affect the quality and clarity of the X-ray image. You should also obtain any prior mammograms and bring them with you to your appointment.

When you arrive at the testing area, you will be asked to remove all clothing from the waist up and put on a gown. Your procedure may be slightly different depending on whether you are having a two-dimensional (2-D) mammogram or a three-dimensional (3-D) mammogram.

  • Note: If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, it is very important that you notify your imaging technologist before your mammogram. Exposure to radiation can be harmful to an unborn baby.
  • Before your mammogram, our imaging staff will ask you to complete a medical history sheet that asks questions about breast problems, breast surgeries or biopsies. Your technologist will review your history with you prior to the procedure. You will also have an opportunity to ask the technologist any questions that you may have about the procedure.
