Family Planning Services

At UPMC, we prioritize reproductive health and offer a full range of services.

Our team of obstetrician-gynecologists are specialists in the family planning field and aim to work with you to meet your individual needs regarding birth control, pregnancy options, termination, miscarriage, and pregnancy loss.

We are also a primary training site for the Ryan Residency Training Program in Family Planning and the Fellowship in Complex Family Planning.

Reproductive Conditions We Treat

We provide compassionate and nonjudgmental care to cover your reproductive needs and goals with:

  • Contraception, including your concerns due to a complex medical history.
  • Pregnancy termination care:
    • Surgical termination up to 23 weeks 6 days.
    • Medication termination up to 10 weeks 0 days.
  • Treatment of miscarriage, and fetal demise, up to 23 weeks 6 days.
  • Management of complicated ectopic pregnancy.

Family Planning Consultation and Management

Our services include comprehensive counseling and management, specifically:

  • Routine contraceptive services. We provide contraception counseling in a supportive environment. We offer all FDA-approved birth control methods, including:
    • Barrier methods.
    • Birth control implants.
    • Birth control injections.
    • Birth control patches and rings.
    • Birth control pills.
    • Emergency contraception.
    • Intrauterine devices (IUD).
  • Specialty clinic for complex contraception due to medical history or prior difficult IUD and implant insertion or removal.
  • Discussion and provision of tubal sterilization procedures.
  • In-office dilation and curettage (D&C) and medical termination provision.
  • Dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedures with sedation.

Research and Clinical Trials at Magee

The Center for Family Planning Research (CFPR) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital conducts clinical research focused primarily on the development and advancement of contraceptive methods and products for HIV prevention.
