UPMC Pain Management

As a division of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, the UPMC Pain Management Division is a multidisciplinary clinical, teaching, and research endeavor spread over several clinic locations.

Pain is personal. UPMC Pain Management recognizes that everyone experiences pain in very different ways — from how much it hurts to how long it lasts. At UPMC, we are at the forefront of innovation in pain management research, education, and patient care. Our expert team brings together specialists in many areas to create highly personalized treatment plans for patients of all ages.

UPMC Pain Management evaluates and treats every type of pain disorder. Our multidisciplinary team approach to pain care brings together dedicated professionals from various specialties including anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychology. We provide pain treatment that recognizes the biological, psychological, and social factors that shape how every person experiences and manages their pain.

At UPMC Pain Management, we develop a personalized pain treatment plan for each patient. Our experts will work with you and your doctor or specialist to establish your goals and make decisions about your pain management care. As a new patient in our office, your initial evaluation will allow your physician to make a diagnosis and put together a personalized pain treatment plan.

Why UPMC Pain Management?

While everyone experiences pain, there is still a great deal that medicine doesn’t know about it. UPMC Pain Management is committed to advancing medicine’s understanding of pain through research, patient care, and education.

  • We apply the insights from our research findings directly to your patient care, giving you access to the latest advancements and treatments.
  • We established national pain management guidelines related to the pandemic for pain management telemedicine.
  • We were among the nation’s leading pain medicine programs to incorporate the innovative Collaborative Health Outcomes Information Registry (CHOIR) pain assessment into our patient care.
  • We are preparing the next generation of medical experts in this evolving field through our fellowship program.

UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh have played a leadership role in addressing pain medicine delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, including an article in Pain Medicine — the official journal of the American Association of Pain Management (AAPA) — which outlines best practice guidelines using telemedicine for chronic pain. Additionally, in his role as president of the AAPA, Ajay Wasan, MD, vice chair for pain medicine at UPMC, held a series of national webinars advising providers on how to adjust their practice to the COVID pandemic in order to keep patients safe while still receiving high quality pain care. Learn more.
