Life changing is... caring for those who need help most

At UPMC, caring for others and improving lives is always our focus. UPMC provides more care to the region’s vulnerable populations than any other health system.

By covering more than a quarter of Pennsylvania’s charity care costs, UPMC is making care accessible to individuals and families who are uninsured or underinsured. And by providing care to more than half of Medical Assistance patients in western Pennsylvania, UPMC is subsidizing patient care and helping to bridge gaps in government programs for low-income residents.

UPMC Health Plan is the leading medical insurer for at-risk populations in Pennsylvania:

  • UPMC for You is the largest Medical Assistance managed care insurer in western Pennsylvania and continues to expand statewide.
  • UPMC’s Community Care Behavioral Health Organization is the largest Medical Assistance Behavioral Health company in Pennsylvania — with 1.3 million members in 43 counties.
  • UPMC for Kids is the largest Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) managed care organization in the state.
  • UPMC is one of three insurers statewide participating in Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program, which coordinates health care coverage and long-term supports for individuals who have both Medicare and Medicaid health insurance. The program increases opportunities for older individuals and people with disabilities to stay in their homes.

These programs help to enhance the health of our community members by supporting seniors, urban and rural communities, and homeless populations, as well as subsidizing transportation, tackling substance abuse, and addressing underlying behavioral health needs.

UPMC is also working to address the social determinants of health and to reduce health care disparities across our region.

UPMC's community benefits contributions represent 15% of the health system's net patient revenue, as compared to all other Pennsylvania hospitals: a statewide average of 8.5%
