Launched in 2023, the UPMC Center for Sustainability builds on more than a decade of environmental initiatives across the UPMC health system. The Center serves as the hub for advancing sustainability efforts that support patient care, protect natural resources, and strengthen community health.
Our Mission
The UPMC Center for Sustainability integrates environmental responsibility into health care operations—reducing our environmental footprint while enhancing the quality, resilience, and equity of care we deliver.
Our Vision for a Sustainable Future
UPMC embraces a bold vision for sustainability across our organization and beyond. Guided by science and collaboration, we are working toward ambitious, long-term goals:
- Reduce UPMC’s carbon footprint by 50% by 2030
- Achieve net-zero emissions by 2050
- Embed sustainability teams across more than 40 hospitals and hundreds of outpatient locations
These goals reflect our commitment to both environmental stewardship and the long-term health of our communities.
How We Drive Change
The Center for Sustainability brings together UPMC executive leadership, clinicians, and staff members to turn strategy into action. Together, teams collaborate to design, implement, and scale sustainable solutions throughout the entire health system. More than 1,000 UPMC employees have participated in our efforts to bring about change.
