As Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the Gynecologic Oncology Cancer Program at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, Dr. Madeleine Courtney-Brooks guides patients through every stage of their cancer journey, from diagnosis and surgery to treatment and remission.

Gynecologic oncology is unique in that physicians often provide both surgical and medical treatment, allowing them to build lasting relationships with patients over many years.
“From the first time I meet a patient, I feel confident telling them that they are going to get the outstanding level of care that I would want for any of my own family members,” Dr. Courtney-Brooks says.
A major part of her practice involves minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Using small incisions and advanced technology, patients can often recover more quickly, return home sooner, and resume their daily lives faster than with traditional methods.

One patient recently told Dr. Courtney-Brooks that, because of the care she received, she lived to see milestones she once feared she would miss, like watching her child graduate from high school. Not only was the patient present for that day, but also for her child’s college graduation—and now, they’re celebrating the birth of the patient’s first grandchild.
“To be able to be a part of those moments with patients is the entire reason I practice medicine.”
