COVID-19 Vaccines at UPMC

In fall 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved updated COVID-19 vaccines. They are formulated to target current circulating variants and to provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death.

UPMC Recommendations for COVID-19 Seasonal Vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination remains an important way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the community against currently circulating variants. COVID-19 vaccines help lower the risk of serious complications, including hospitalization and death.

UPMC recommends the 2023-2024 seasonal vaccination for everyone, aged 6 months and older, including people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This recommendation is in line with the most recent federal guidance from the FDA and CDC. Getting vaccinated and staying up to date on vaccinations is recommended to prepare your immune system. It is especially important as we begin respiratory virus season.

Vaccine history: Unvaccinated or vaccinated

  • 2023 - 2024 seasonal COVID-19 vaccine
    • Moderna (one dose)
eight weeks or more after the last dose.

**For people who receive Pfizer, three doses of Pfizer are recommended. Talk with your provider about the timing.

***For people who received one dose of Pfizer, two doses of mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer) vaccine are recommended. For people who received two or more doses of Pfizer, one dose of mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer) vaccine is recommended. Talk with your provider about the timing.

****If you choose to receive Pfizer, talk with your provider about the timing.

Where to Get the Seasonal COVID-19 Vaccine

Across the nation, there is a complex supply chain process — ordering, shipping, and delivery — for the 2023-2024 seasonal doses. You may find that vaccines are available at primary care offices, some UPMC Urgent Care locations, and retail pharmacies. Before scheduling an appointment, ask the office if the seasonal COVID-19 vaccine is available.

UPMC offers the Moderna 2023-24 seasonal COVID-19 vaccine. If you prefer Pfizer, talk with your provider.

For children, parents or guardians should speak with their pediatrician or a UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics office for options on scheduling. Children under 5 years old should receive all their doses from the same vaccine manufacturer, if feasible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scheduling with UPMC

Contact the office where you scheduled your vaccine. If you scheduled an appointment with a UPMC Children's Community Pediatrics office, please visit their website.

If you need accommodations for your preferred language, sensory processing needs, anxiety, physical disabilities, or privacy needs, please discuss this with your provider when you schedule your vaccine appointment or when you arrive at the office.

Six months and older. Talk to your doctor to see which is right for you and your family.

The FDA authorized Novavax for individuals age 12 and older. Like other available COVID-19 vaccines, the Novavax vaccine prepares your immune system to recognize and control COVID-19.

The vaccines are considered safe for those who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. If you are unsure or if you plan to receive the Novovax vaccine, we encourage you to talk with your OB provider.
