Millions of Americans live with behavioral health problems, from mental illness and intellectual disabilities to addiction.

If a behavioral health issue is making it hard for you or a loved one to live and function in a healthy way, it's vital to get proper care right away.

At UPMC Mercy, we offer year-round, around-the-clock access to quality behavioral health services. We will treat you with dignity and respect in a highly personalized and supportive setting.

Emergency Behavioral Services

If you're having a behavioral health crisis, you can come directly to UPMC Mercy’s Emergency Department for an evaluation at our Evaluation and Referral Center (ERC).

A person who is experiencing a behavioral health emergency also may get referred to us by:

  • A primary care doctor, private psychiatrist, therapist, mental health center, or other outpatient care provider
  • A family member
  • A police officer
  • An emergency medical services professional
  • A mobile crisis team clinician

Based on information the ERC clinician obtained during an initial assessment, he or she will recommend a care plan that can include:

  • Admission to UPMC Mercy or transfer to another inpatient facility.
  • Discharge with referrals to proper outpatient programs.
  • Holding for an exam by a psychiatrist.
