EKGs at the Department of Family Medicine

UPMC Content 3

An electrocardiogram, also known as an EKG or ECG, is a painless test that measures the electrical activity of your heart.

EKGs are used to monitor heart conditions. They are sometimes required for pre-operative testing.

What to Expect During an EKG

An EKG involves you laying down while a nurse places a series of stickers attached to wires to your chest, arms, and leg.

The machine records the electrical signals from your heart in a few seconds and the test is over. There are no needles or blood involved.

Why Should I Have an EKG?

If you have a complaint or condition involving your heart, an EKG is often one of the first tests performed.

It can give the doctor information about heart attacks and the rhythm of the heart.

Our family medicine health clinics are all equipped to perform EKG tests. If you come to one of our clinics for evaluation of a medical condition that may involve your heart, we're prepared to take care of you.
