As one of the largest rehabilitation centers in the United States, UPMC offers access to an unmatched continuum of care, including inpatient, transitional, outpatient, and long-term care services, at more than 90 locations.
From the time you are admitted to the hospital immediately following an injury until you are released and receiving outpatient care, UPMC is there for you throughout your entire rehabilitation journey.
And, our use of electronic medical records means that, at each phase of your recovery, our experts have access to your full information, providing an unmatched continuum of care.
When you are admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation unit, an individualized plan of care will be put in place, including several types of therapies and rehabilitation services.
Because the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute has locations in acute care hospitals, you can immediately access a wide range of on-site services, such as:
One difference between inpatient rehabilitation and the acute care unit (where patients are treated for a short period of time for a serious illness or injury) is the amount of time spent out of bed. Patients in the rehabilitation unit must be able to handle three hours of therapy a day.
This is an excellent choice for people who are not ready for inpatient rehabilitation or for those who can only tolerate limited hours of daily therapy. Transitional rehabilitation can be an interim step for patients who need the care provided at a specialized nursing facility before returning home. Learn more.
Outpatient rehabilitation often is the next step after leaving an acute care or skilled nursing setting. It also may be the best choice for those patients whose ongoing needs do not require inpatient care.
Outpatient rehabilitation programs are supported through an extensive network of services.
Our rehabilitation experts team up with clinical experts throughout UPMC to provide an unparalleled continuum of care.
These partnerships provide our patients with seamless care, from the time of injury through the rehabilitative process.
