If you’re pregnant with your first child, you surely have a lot of questions and maybe even a few fears. The UPMC Nurse-Family Partnership® is here to help.
Our program partners pregnant mothers like you with highly trained UPMC registered nurses who offer support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and your child’s first years of life.
Because we know that when mothers feel supported, families can thrive.
What is the UPMC Nurse-Family Partnership®?
The Nurse-Family Partnership is a free community health program that helps enhance the lives of women who are pregnant with their first child. Each eligible mother-to-be is partnered with a UPMC nurse who makes regular home visits beginning in early pregnancy and continuing through the child’s second birthday.
During these visits, our nurses set the mother-to-be up for success by building a strong network of support around her and instilling confidence in her parenting ability. After the baby arrives, our nurses promote positive health and attachment behaviors between the mother and her baby.
The experience not only fosters a powerful bond between the nurse, mother, and baby, but it also makes a measurable difference for the entire family. We encourage fathers, family members, and even friends to be involved in the visits to learn how they can best support new mothers.
Who is Eligible for Services of the UPMC Nurse-Family Partnership®?
The Nurse-Family Partnership works with pregnant mothers who are facing significant adversity, including socioeconomic barriers. When new mothers have the support they need, they are better able to break the cycles of inequality — including poverty, trauma, and poor health — and achieve wellbeing for themselves and their families.
The program is free of charge for those who are accepted.
What Services Do We offer at the UPMC Nurse-Family Partnership®?
Each mother-to-be is partnered with a UPMC nurse who makes regular home visits during the pregnancy and the early years of the child’s life.
During these home visits, our nurses will help to:

- Connect the mother with support services, such as health care, childcare, and job training.
- Detect early warning signs of health or developmental problems during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood.
- Help the mother to develop job skills and explore opportunities for continued education.
- Help the mother to set future goals for herself and her family.
- Increase the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
- Make the home a safe place for the baby.
- Teach and ensure confidence in parenting skills.
What Can I Expect?
Families who have participated in the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) have consistently demonstrated significant improvements in prenatal health, childhood health and development, and family stability.
You can expect the same care, compassion, and support that resulted in these successful outcomes:
- At 23 years of age and 27 weeks pregnant, "D" enrolled in the NFP program. She delivered her 10-pound baby boy naturally at 40 weeks. Her son continued to exclusively receive breast milk at five months of age. She is working two jobs to support her family.
- "J" enrolled in NFP when she was 20 years old and 14 weeks pregnant. While pregnant, she applied for and accepted a job at Hersheypark and worked through the summer season. Motivated by her daughter, J reenrolled in high school to finish her senior year. At a visit, she said, "I don’t know what I would have done without this program. I am so confident now."
