For two years in a row, UPMC claimed ownership of the #1 spot in the Diversity MBA “50 Out Front: Best Companies for Women & Diverse Managers” rankings, first earning the honor in 2019. In 2021, UPMC ranked #2, holding one of the top five spots for three years in a row.
Key elements used to determine the rankings are representation, recruitment, workplace inclusion, retention, succession planning, and accountability.
Retaining a spot in the top five can be attributed to UPMC's outstanding commitment to fostering a diverse workforce and leadership team.
The Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) is the national LGBTQ benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors, and employees.
In 2022, 12 UPMC facilities were recognized as HEI Leaders. These include:
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. LGBTQ individuals often experience discrimination and other challenges because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
UPMC Health Plan and Community Care Behavioral Health have again earned the highest score possible and a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality” honor in 2021 from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
This marks the third consecutive year that UPMC Health Plan and the second consecutive year that Community Care received the HRC Foundation’s “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equity” and reflects UPMC’s stated values of “Dignity & Respect” for all LGBTQ+ employers and members. Across UPMC, 26 facilities have been recognized by the HRC Foundation for LGBTQ+ policies.
UPMC was recognized by the National Diversity Council’s Healthcare Diversity Council as one of only three health care organizations recognized nationally for creating or spearheading innovative diversity initiatives that establish and foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment, participating and/or organizing programs that benefit and involve the community, exhibiting and demonstrating commitment to the highest ethical standards, integrity, and professional excellence, and committing to the recruitment, training, development, and retention of individuals from all populations.

The Vibrant Index Initiative drives diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) changes across industry and sector. The Vibrant Index identifies areas of success as well as what critical actions are needed to improve the practices, policies, and cultures of organizations in the Pittsburgh region. The Vibrant Index encourages companies to reflect on best practices while investigating opportunities to increase the impact of their DE&I efforts.

Receiving a perfect score in every category put UPMC ahead of any average that was measured in each category. UPMC as an organization is proud to celebrate this accomplishment, but also, to uphold this score in the years to come.
