Conditions We Treat at the Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center

Conditions We Treat at the Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center

Like other parts of your body, your skin changes over time. That’s why the UPMC Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center believes in developing a long-term relationship with you and being your health care partner throughout all the stages of your life.

Some of the more common skin conditions we treat with traditional aesthetic services, noninvasive cosmetic procedures, ablative and non-ablative laser procedures, and minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, include:

  • Acne — Acne is a skin condition that occurs when oil or dead skin cells clog your hair follicles (pores). The clogging causes bacteria to grow. The CoolTouch III® and CoolBreeze® lasers target and shrink oil glands. This decreases their ability to produce acne.
  • Birthmarks — Birthmarks are irregularities that appear on the skin at or after birth. There are many different types, and treatment depends on the type. Treatment options include the MedLite®, V-Beam, Cynergy™, and CoolGlide® lasers.
  • Broken blood vessels — Broken blood vessels under the skin can cause skin irregularities. Treatment options include the V-Beam, Cynergy™, and CoolGlide® lasers.
  • Cellulite — Cellulite occurs when there are excess fat cells in the deepest layer of the skin. The cells protrude through the connective tissue and cause dimpling on the skin.
  • Enlarged pores — Your pores are small openings in the skin. Many factors can make your pores larger and your skin look uneven. The Genesis laser can reduce your pores, making your skin look healthier, younger, and more even. The CoolTouch III® and CoolBreeze® lasers can help people with more prominent pores or large pores and oily skin.
  • Excess and loose skin (skin laxity) — Age, weight loss, and other factors can cause excess, loose, and sagging skin. Traditional procedures to treat this issue include facelifts and liposuction. Other options include noninvasive ultrasound with the Ulthera™ system and Thermage® radiofrequency treatments.
  • Facial redness — Facial redness can occur from many causes, from acne and rosacea to aging and hormonal changes. The Genesis laser can treat facial redness.
  • Freckles and sunspots — Freckles and sunspots are marks on the skin that often appear after exposure to sunlight. The MedLite® laser can remove freckles.
  • Hemangiomas (strawberry birthmarks) — Hemangiomas (strawberry birthmarks) are red, pink, or purplish lesions caused by a cluster of blood vessels near the skin's surface. The V-Beam, Cynergy™ and CoolGlide® lasers can remove or lighten hemangiomas.
  • Leg veins (spider veins) — Spider veins are clusters of blue, red, or purple veins that can appear on the ankles, calves, or thighs. Sclerotherapy is preferred for fine veins. The V-Beam, Cynergy™, and CoolGlide® lasers can treat spider veins on the legs.
  • Oily skin — Oily skin occurs when the oil glands produce too much of an oil called sebum. The CoolBreeze® laser can shrink oil glands, decreasing their ability to produce acne.
  • Onychomycosis (nail fungus) — Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails that can occur for many reasons. Most often, it affects the toenails. The CoolBreeze® laser is a safe alternative to prescription medications.
  • Port wine stains — Port wine stains are a type of birthmark that typically appear on the face, neck, arms, or legs. They can be pale pink to dark purple in color and grow as a person grows. Treatment with the V-Beam, Cynergy™, and CoolGlide® lasers can lighten or remove them.
  • Rosacea — Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and bumps on the face. The V-Beam, Cynergy™, and CoolGlide® lasers can treat rosacea.
  • Scars — Scars are marks that appear on the skin when it heals. They may appear after an injury, surgery, acne, or another type of skin wound. There are many treatment options, including dermal fillers, chemical peels, and surgical excision. The noninvasive Pearl Fractional laser can also treat scars by resurfacing the skin.
  • Sun damage — Without proper protection, the sun's rays can harm your skin in many ways. Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and Pearl Fractional lasers can reduce the signs of sun damage.
  • Unwanted fat — Unwanted fat refers to excess fat in different areas of the body. The tumescent liposuction technique, performed under local anesthesia, can remove unwanted fat.
  • Unwanted hair — Unwanted hair can cause discomfort and embarrassment. Laser hair removal using the Apogee® or CoolGlide® lasers can destroy the hair follicles and prevent hair regrowth.
  • Wrinkles and fine lines — Wrinkles and fine lines are marks on the skin that are signs of aging skin. There are many possible treatments, from peels and lasers to BOTOX®, Dysport®, and dermal fillers.
