Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship

UPMC Content 3

The pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship provides fellows with an investigational year in ventricular mechanical support and a clinical year that offers extensive exposure in managing simple and complex congenital heart lesions, including cardiopulmonary transplantation and assist devices.

In addition, fellows receive instruction in the application of principles of cardiac and pulmonary physiology to the pre- and postoperative care of pediatric patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery for acquired heart diseases and diseases of the major thoracic vessels.

Hands-on Intensive Care and Postoperative Training

This extensive hands-on instruction emphasizes acute intensive care both in and out of the intensive care unit, including:

  • Fluid management
  • Pharmacological management
  • Ventilatory management

In addition, fellows receive training in the application of the general principles of post-operative surgical care, including:

  • Incisional care
  • Pulmonary care
  • Basic technical skills and related operative techniques
  • Exposure to operative therapy for children with cardiothoracic diseases and diseases of the major thoracic vessels

Additional Learning Experiences for Pediatric CT Surgery Fellows

Congenital heart disease

Additional instruction and learning experiences involve acquiring an overall understanding of the field of congenital heart surgery with a deep understanding of congenital heart disease as currently diagnosed and practiced.

This includes exposure to the management of infants and children presenting with cyanotic and non-cyanotic congenital heart disease.

Seminars

Fellows also receive thorough didactic educational experiences, including clinical review seminars and research seminars.

This intensive didactic component will enable the trainee to develop and establish an outline for his or her self-education in the focused area of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.
