UPMC Six-Year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program

UPMC Content 2
For those just out of medical school interested in training with one of the nation’s premier cardiothoracic surgery residency programs, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offers a six-year integrated program. The school also has a two-year cardiothoracic surgery residency for those who have completed an accredited general surgery residency.

The six-year CT residency program includes:

  • Two years of prerequisite cardiothoracic surgery clinical training
  • Four years requisite cardiothoracic surgery clinical training
  • Optional two years academic enrichment through laboratory or clinical research opportunities (great for those wishing to pursue a graduate degree in a related or ancillary field)

This curriculum provides residents with a focused background and hands-on experience in cardiothoracic surgery, including:

  • 26 months core surgical education for cardiac track
  • 25 months core surgical education in thoracic track

It allows for one resident per post-graduate year in each of the cardiac and thoracic tracks for a total complement of 12 residents.
