Chemotherapy at Magee

UPMC Content 3

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells. It is often used to treat breast cancer, either by itself or following breast cancer surgery.

Treating Breast Cancer With Chemotherapy

Depending on the stage and type of breast cancer, chemotherapy may be:

  • Taken by mouth
  • Given as an injection
  • Given as an infusion

The Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Program in Pittsburgh, provides a private atmosphere where you can receive chemotherapy.

Other comprehensive services include:

  • Laboratory specimen collection
  • Administration of blood and blood products
  • Maintenance of center venous access devices
  • Intraperitoneal ports
  • Patient navigation and social work services
  • Psychosocial counseling
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Ostomy care

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of chemotherapy can vary depending on the type of cancer you have and the type of drugs being used for your treatment. Some newer chemotherapy drugs may cause fewer side effects because they can better target cancer cells. Possible side effects from chemotherapy include the following:

  • Increased likelihood of infections
  • Fatigue
  • Pain from nerve damage
  • Dry mouth, mouth sores, or swelling of the mouth
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or upset stomach
  • Hair Loss

Some medications can be prescribed to control the above side effects. If you are experiencing any side effects from chemotherapy, contact your doctor.

Follow the beat for a healthier life. Read our blog post to learn the difference between chemo and radiation.
