Orthopaedic Care at UPMC Mercy

UPMC Content 2

UPMC Mercy offers a comprehensive approach to the treatment of patients with muscle, bone, and joint disorders — problems related to injury or trauma, sports injury, arthritis, rheumatology, cancer, osteoporosis, or other metabolic bone diseases.

The goal is to work with the patient and family to relieve pain, restore function, and promote each patient's ability to perform as independently as possible when they return home.

What UPMC Mercy Provides

The joint replacement team at UPMC Mercy include:

  • Primary care physicians
  • Staff nurses
  • Orthopaedic surgeons
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Endocrinologists
  • Rheumatologists
  • Psychiatrists and rehabilitation specialists
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Pain management specialists
  • Geriatricians
  • Exercise physiologists
  • Registered dietitians

Joint replacement patients at UPMC Mercy are admitted to a specialized unit where the staff is experienced in providing care to orthopaedic patients, and has training in UPMC Mercy’s protocols for joint replacement patients. This approach allows coordination among the surgeons, surgical teams, and nursing staff, with an emphasis on patient outcomes, recovery, and function.

Hip Resurfacing

Hip resurfacing preserves the femoral head and the femoral neck. Your surgeon will remove a few centimeters of bone around the femoral head, shaping it to fit tightly inside the implant.

The hip resurfacing team at UPMC Mercy includes:

  • Board-certified orthopaedic surgeons with training and experience in total joint replacement and hip resurfacing
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Board-certified rehabilitation physicians
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Physical and occupational therapists
  • Home care nurses and therapists

Rehabilitation

Patients receive rehabilitation therapy after surgery to start the process of returning to an active lifestyle. The UPMC Mercy Rehabilitation Center, part of the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, is accredited by The Joint Commission.

UPMC also provides outpatient services through the Centers for Rehab Services.
