UPMC Mercy’s board-certified ophthalmologists are doctors — medical doctors (MD) and osteopathic doctors (DO) — who specialize in all aspects of eye and vision care. Their extensive medical training prepares them to diagnose and treat all forms of eye problems, perform surgery, and prescribe medicines.

UPMC Eye Center Mercy’s experts also include optometrists and opticians. Who you see generally depends on the level of care you need.
An optometrist, or doctor of optometry (OD), is a specialist in optical disorders and vision. Our optometrist, Craig Luchansky, OD, is trained and licensed to examine, diagnose, and treat eyes for both vision and health problems, and correct refractive errors by prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. He will refer serious eye problems or diseases to one of our ophthalmologists.
Opticians are technicians trained to fill lens prescriptions and assist patients with lens and frame selection and fitting. Our opticians work closely with UPMC Mercy’s ophthalmologists and optometrists to support all your vision needs.
