The UPMC Vision Institute harnesses the clinical and research expertise of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology.

Our doctors, scientists, engineers, and allied experts are working together to:

  • Improve the quality of life for people with impaired vision.

The UPMC Vision Institute's headquarters opened at the UPMC Mercy Pavilion on May 1, 2023.

This state-of-the-art facility in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood includes many resources for our experts, patients, visitors, and neighbors, such as:

  • 410,000 square feet of clinical and research space.
  • A dedicated clinical trials center.
  • Cutting-edge biotherapy treatments.
  • Patient-centered resources, including a life skills apartment, street lab, and rooftop sensory garden.
  • Complete low-vision rehab technologies and services.
  • Enhanced and proactive screening and care for underserved populations.

Beyond the UPMC Mercy Pavilion, the UPMC Vision Institute includes other vision care and optical shops in and around Pittsburgh.

A Commitment to Vision Research and Education

As members of Pitt's Department of Ophthalmology, UPMC Vision Institute doctors:

  • Are leaders in research.
  • Have extensive training in state-of-the-art ophthalmic technologies and techniques.
  • Teach six residents and five clinical fellows each year.

We have an outstanding teaching program. We train numerous grad and postdoctoral students and research fellows from the U.S. and abroad.

The UPMC Vision Institute is also at the forefront of CME. We provide both ongoing and specialized training for community-based doctors.
