About Our Patients
Our patients come from both urban and rural settings. They each have their own unique pathologies and socioeconomic dynamics. The clinical experience provides access to inpatient and outpatient care for patients of all ages.
About Our Residency Program
Internship curriculum
Interns are gradually introduced into the process of becoming neurology residents through a shadowing program with senior residents throughout the year. This experience allows the interns a seamless transition into their second year.
Year one curriculum includes:
- Two months internal medicine.
- Three months neurology.
- One month internal medicine elective.
- One month emergency medicine.
- One month cardiology.
- Two months across all ICUs.
- One month nephrology.
- One month ophthalmology.
Residency
Residents are taught pertinent procedures throughout their training. The residents will become proficient at performing lumbar punctures, administering botulinum toxin injections, interpreting carotid and intracranial Doppler testing, and performing vagal nerve stimulator and deep brain stimulator adjustments. Residents will learn the business side of medicine through exposure to office management, coding, and billing concepts.
Residents become very familiar with treating acute stroke patients by administering TNK or determining if they need neurointervention for clot removal.
Years two through four curriculum includes:
Year Two
- Nine months inpatient neurology.
- One month neuroradiology.
- One month EEG.
- One month elective.
Year Three
- Five months inpatient neurology.
- Three months EMG.
- One month EEG.
- Two and a half months elective.
- Two weeks neuropathology.
- One month research.
Year Four
- Three months inpatient neurology.
- Three months neuropediatrics — UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
- Two months outpatient selective.
- One month elective.
- One month multiple sclerosis.
- One month psychiatry.
Dedicated research time
The schedule allows dedicated time for residents to work on research projects. A full-time PhD research director is eager to assist residents with any research projects. We also have the capability to collaborate with the larger UPMC system and several local universities and medical schools.
Elective rotations
Residents have elective rotations from which they can choose a variety of subspecialties to help supplement their training.
Rotations include:
- Epilepsy (with EEG interpretation training, vagal nerve stimulator, and an epilepsy monitoring unit).
- Movement disorders (with experience in botulinum toxin injections and deep brain stimulation).
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Nerve conduction studies and EMG training.
- Neurointensive care.
- Neurointervention.
- Neurology inpatient service.
- Neuroradiology.
- Neurorehabilitation.
- Neurosurgery.
Residents also have access to a wide variety of other subspecialty electives through our connection with the entire UPMC system.

Our Residency Program Faculty
Residency Program Eligibility
Residents are selected on the basis of academic performance, interviews, and recommendations.
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for an ACGME accredited program:
- Graduated from a medical school in the U.S. or Canada accredited by the LCME.
- Graduated from a college of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. accredited by the AOA.
- Graduated from a medical school outside the U.S. or Canada and either holds a valid ECFMG certificate prior to appointment or holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which the ACGME-accredited program is located.
How to Apply to the Neurology Residency Program
- Complete the ERAS application form.
- Submit at least three letters of recommendation from physicians who are acquainted with your work or capabilities.
UPMC Hamot participates in the ERAS Program and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). No additional information outside of ERAS is required.
Interviews will be held in November, December, and January. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1.
