The UPMC in Central Pa. Cardiovascular Surgery Program has been recognized at both the state and national levels for providing the most advanced cardiovascular surgical care.
Every year, we perform more than 1,000 cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures, including more than 600 heart bypass surgeries. Our surgeons are nationally recognized and our program participates in numerous advanced clinical trials each year.
At the national level, UPMC in Central Pa. has consistently received the highest 3-star quality rating for cardiovascular surgery from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. UPMC in Central Pa. is also recognized for top notch cardiovascular care by a number of independent organizations.

Our surgeons offer the best possible outcomes for the most challenging surgical cases. We offer minimally invasive procedures and advanced hybrid surgeries, many of which do not require opening the chest. In 2014, Dr. Mumtaz developed an innovative technique, called intercostal surgical valve replacement (iSVR), which allows him to operate on the heart between the ribs.
Together with our interventional cardiologists, our cardiovascular surgeons offer dually-performed procedures, such as robotic CABG followed by stenting, percutaneous heart valve replacement (TAVR) and hybrid convergent procedure for atrial fibrillation.
