Our program at the Central PA division of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute (UPMC HVI) aims to train physicians to gain the highest level of technical and cognitive skills in performing a wide variety of interventional procedures. Fellows are expected to:
- Gain competency in applying guideline-based patient care and procedural judgement in a wide variety of coronary and peripheral vascular interventions.
- Achieve proficiency in range of interventional procedures with added emphasis on pre- and post- operative evaluation and management.
- Learn to identify and manage acute cardiovascular conditions including cardiogenic shock and complications arising from interventions so that lifesaving interventions can be performed in timely manner.
- Develop skills in evaluating and managing patient with structural heart disease and participate in structural heart procedures
- Active participation in clinical research and scholarly activity
- Foster highest order of ethical conduct, professionalism and leadership skills necessary for successful academic/clinical careers in interventional cardiology.

- Eligibility: Completion of an ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and eligibility for a Pennsylvania Medical Training License
- Application Process: UPMC Harrisburg is a participating member of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and all applicants for Post-Graduate Year-7 positions must register with these programs. Three letters of recommendation required, including from your Program Director and Department Chair. We consider applicants with visa requirements as well.
Curriculum Overview
Clinical Training
- Fellow will be trained in our state-of-the-art procedure labs performing a wide variety of advanced coronary, peripheral and structural procedures. Each year we perform over 1200 coronary interventions and 600 peripheral vascular interventions. We have a robust and high-volume structural heart program that will provide a comprehensive training experience.
- Hands-on training in:
- Coronary angiography and PCI
- Intravascular imaging
- Physiologic lesion assessment (FFR, DFR)
- Coronary atherectomy (rotational, orbital, laser)
- Mechanical circulatory support
- Peripheral angiography and interventions
- Pulmonary angiography and invasive VTE therapies
Didactics & Conferences
- Weekly complex coronary cath conference
- Optional valve conference
- Bimonthly didactic sessions
- Participation in national meetings
Research & Scholarly Activity
- Completion of at least one research project
- Access to multicenter trials via UPMC HVI
