Gerri's Story

Gerri was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder.

“Having sickle cell was debilitating,” she says.

The pain and fatigue she dealt with prevented her from doing many of the activities she enjoys like biking, gardening and spending time with friends. Her biggest fear though, was that she would not be able to have children.

At UPMC, she found the education, support and treatment she needed.

“I’ve dealt with doctors in other systems, and they just didn’t understand sickle cell,” Gerri says. “I can do so much more than I could do before,” she says.

Today, she and her husband are proud parents of a very active two-year-old son.

“It’s incredible. UPMC has changed so much of my life.”
