What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is an inflammatory condition that is often debilitating. Scar tissue, or plaque, forms inside of the penis, causing a curved erection that can prevent normal erectile function. This, in turn, interferes with the ability to penetrate during intercourse. The plaque is often dense and can usually be felt through the penile skin. Peyronie’s disease can be painful and psychologically devastating.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Peyronie’s Disease

A doctor often can feel scar tissue inside the penis during a physical exam. In some cases, a doctor might use an ultrasound as part of the exam. Other conditions may cause similar symptoms to Peyronie’s disease and need to be ruled out by an exam.
