What is Sperm Retrieval?

At times, the only method for a couple to achieve biologic fatherhood is through surgical sperm extraction. Sperm retrieval is a process to get sperm for fertility purposes. When pregnancy is the goal, but is not possible without help, couples can pursue sperm retrieval. Candidates for sperm retrieval include men who have little or no sperm in the semen, or men who are not able to ejaculate.

Sperm Retrieval Treatments and Surgery

Experienced surgeons use advanced microsurgical techniques, including microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE), to extract sperm for in vitro fertilization. The care plan is coordinated with the female partner’s reproductive endocrinologist. There are several ways to do this procedure, and the physicians at the Men’s Health Center will work with each patient to determine which option is best for his individual needs.
