Life Changing Is … Speaking the Language of Caring

María Cecilia D., Sr. Manager, International Department

Mariace is a cultural advocate for children from other countries.

Her job entails helping to coordinate between families and doctors to insure international children get the best care possible and that they have the support they need while they’re in Pittsburgh.

“We are here for them from when they are in their home countries seeking care until after they returned to their home,” she says.

An important part of Mariace's work is making sure patients receive care in their preferred language.

UPMC Children’s has language services available that allow patients to better understand and communicate with their care team. It’s available at all levels of care – in wayfinding, during appointments and discharge, in follow-up, and in non-clinical services.

Having such a service available allows UPMC Children’s to deliver culturally competent care, Mariace believes.

“Our job has a purpose,” she says. “We are here to serve and help families who otherwise wouldn't be able to receive the care they need.”

The teamwork at UPMC Children’s to guide and care for patients impresses Mariace.

“Sometimes I must pinch myself,” she says. “We really see miracles here.”

At UPMC, Life Changing Medicine is working together toward an important goal.
