Youth Wellness and Community Education

Education is a vital part of a person’s ability to make positive decisions regarding their physical, mental, and emotional health. Whether a person is 65+ or 2 years old, we have programs aiming to teach individuals how manage their diet, activity level, and mental health. Through knowledge, children, adults, and families can advocate for their healthiest self.

Our program has partnered with doctors, community stakeholders, schools, registered dieticians, counselors, and physical activity experts, to bring a variety of educational opportunities to the people living in the Dauphin County, Lancaster-Lititz, Lebanon, Cumberland-Perry, and York-Hanover areas. Families and individuals are able to use the tools presented in our programs to make lifestyle changes and positive decisions to prevent obesity, heart disease, diabetes, falls, and many other illnesses.

Our staff is highly educated and is able to match participants with the program that best fits the health needs of you, your family, or your community.

Youth Programs

This is a 12 month program for overweight or obese youth ages 6-19 years old. Individualized plans in fitness, nutrition and mental health are created based on the youth’s healthy goals and interests. They are assigned a health coach that provides accountability and empowers the youth to make healthy behavior choices. We encourage whole family support and participation as the youth implements practices in meetings and in their daily life. The focus is finding new, interesting, and fun ways for the youth to explore and apply healthy habits.

To see if your child qualifies, contact the Monica Lazur-Hagerman at lazurml@upmc.edu or 717-782-4703.

One in three children in Pennsylvania is overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Studies show that children who are overweight are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other medical conditions.

That’s why UPMC in Central Pa. has partnered with schools in the Harrisburg area to combat childhood obesity through education.

The Community Education team assists Certified School Nurses with completing mandated health school screenings for students, elementary aged to high school. Screenings include height, weight, vision, hearing, and dental.  Screening early and regularly is an important way to stay on top of the health of the students and address concerns early. We want to help ensure all students have access to basic, routine, health needs.

Currently we work with in Harrisburg School District and Perry County School Districts

If your school is interested in receiving assistance with their mandated school screenings, contact Monica Lazur-Hagerman at lazurml@upmc.edu or 717-782-4703.

Virtual presentations are held once/month on a variety of topics (cooking demos, suicide prevention, diabetes, tobacco & vaping, trauma informed care). Presentations can be geared for school faculty/staff and/or parents/caregivers.  Let us know what healthy topics your group wants to learn about!

Currently being provided to York County only.

Community Education

The Education team works closely with many agencies, organizations, businesses, coalitions/task forces, and schools throughout central Pa. We want to help people improve their overall health and well-being through offering a variety of programs.

We want to empower our community to understand their health, allowing them to make beneficial choices regarding nutrition, physical activity, and disease prevention.

  • UPMC in Central Pa. can conduct presentations onsite or virtually on nutrition and physical activity-related topics such as nutrition label reading, cooking demons, carbohydrate control, walking for health, yoga, healthy eating, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart health, diabetes prevention, and more.
  • Staff hold in- person and virtual coking demos for the community.
  • UPMC Memorial is working on a partnership with Central Market York, Eastern Market, Penn Market, and the York Fresh Food Farms Mobile Produce Van to offer a $5.00 produce voucher program.  This program was created to help access more fruits and vegetables into people’s diets, as well as to help people by fresh, local produce.

Let our team help guide you to the right program to fit your needs and concerns!

Older Adult Programs

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every four older adults will fall each year in the U.S. The CDC also states that roughly 36 million Americans fall every year, leading to more than 32,000 deaths annually. These numbers continue to climb each year.

We have programs and educational opportunities aimed to help older adults avoid being part of these statistics.

  • We can conduct presentations onsite or virtually on fall prevention. It can be a 30-minute or 60-minute presentation. We can also include fall risk assessments as part of these presentations.
  • We offer a program called A Matter of Balance, which is an 8-week long program that consists of a structured group intervention emphasizing practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling, as well as increase the participants; overall activity levels. These classes teach participants how to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

These programs are only available in the UPMC Hanover and UPMC Memorial regions at this time.
