Mission Statement

UPMC in central Pa. Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is dedicated to training exceptional physicians who are committed to life-long learning and will deliver comprehensive high quality evidence-based patient care for women and families that is responsive to the needs of the community and the region.

Overall Program Goal

The practice of obstetrics and gynecology requires a commitment to professional and personal growth.  The overall goal of the training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is to provide a clinical program with experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of obstetric and gynecologic conditions that results in the emergence of physicians with the ability for independent and competent practice of the specialty. This four-year program has graduated responsibility with each year building on previous experiences. The clinical program is balanced with educational experiences.  The department curriculum is based on the current CREOG Educational Objectives.  The Graduate Medical Education at UPMC in central Pa. covers education in areas relating to professionalism, interpersonal communication, systems based practice, ethics and practice based learning and health system sciences.  Resident research and quality improvement round out the scholarly activity.

About Our Program

UPMC Harrisburg OB/GYN is an ACGME-accredited program with four residents per class. The program has 16 core faculty and over 25 clinical faculty who participate in resident training. We support a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship and have subspecialty training in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. We also support a robotics curriculum. There are over 4300 deliveries per year of which 1250 are c-sections. Over 800 hysterectomies are performed yearly with only 15% being abdominal. We support 600 laparoscopic gynecologic cases (not including hysterectomy) and 200 operative hysteroscopy cases (not including diagnostic).

The main clinical site is UPMC Harrisburg with rotations at UPMC Lititz, UPMC West Shore, UPMC Memorial, and UPMC Carlisle.

The program would like to tailor the clinical learning experience to each resident utilizing our many resources. For example, someone looking for a more rural experience would spend time with our UPMC Lititz partners, but another wanting a fellowship might opt to head out to UPMC Pittsburgh.
