PGY1 Purpose Statement

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Pharm.D. education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

The program offers three residency positions for a 12 month traditional postgraduate year one residency program. Residents at UPMC Harrisburg practice collaboratively with physicians and nurses to improve the care of our diverse patient populations. Pharmacy practice and medication safety at UPMC Harrisburg is supported by state-of-the-art technologies, including Epic, barcode verification of medications upon dispensing and administration, intelligent infusion devices, offering a fully integrated pharmacosurveillance system for medication management across the continuum of care. Pharmacists assist with the optimization of patient-specific pharmacotherapy through interdisciplinary team interactions as well as standardized protocols. The program is structured in order to facilitate learning and gain experience and sufficient practice with diverse patient populations, a variety of disease states, and a range of patient populations.
