Emergency Nursing Fellowship at UPMC in Central Pa.

The Emergency Nursing Fellowship is designed to provide graduate nurses and registered nurses with a comprehensive, structured orientation to the Emergency Department environment.

About Our Fellowship

In conjunction with staff development instructors, this 24-week program is presented by the UPMC in central Pa. Learning Institute to facilitate your transition into the Emergency Department nursing role by developing:

  • Advanced physical assessment skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Organizational skills
  • Communication skills
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology
  • Clinical skills in state-of-the-art simulation lab
  • Team approach to providing emergency care

Professional development courses and workshops, which are approved for continuing education credit, are offered to promote individual growth. Your staff development instructors will follow your progress and provide ongoing support.

Emergency Services

UPMC in central Pa. is a 636-bed health system located in and around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We have three emergency departments; two in suburban settings and one in downtown Harrisburg. In the Harrisburg Emergency Department, we offer a specialized program, S.A.F.E., for the evaluation and treatment of sexual assault victims. Our emergency departments treat more than 119,000 patients each year with a variety of diagnoses and acuities.

Curriculum

Our Emergency Nursing Fellowship is designed to give you specialized education in emergency nursing through clinical time with an experienced preceptor and a number of specialized courses, including:

  • Emergency Nursing Course
    This course includes didactic learning, exposure to the prehospital environment, skill/procedure competency development, case studies using ENA-based modules, hazmat training, nonviolent crisis intervention and simulations to replicate real-life emergencies.
  • EKG Course
    A self-directed e-learning program, this course provides the foundation for developing basic rhythm interpretation skills.
  • Airway Management Course
    This course teaches best practices for basic and advanced airway management using video-guided instruction and ample skills practice.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course
    In this course you will learn best practices for adult resuscitation using simulations to replicate real-life emergencies.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course
