Dawndra Jones, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, Vice President of Patient Care Services
At UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, we are a nationally renowned hospital and a leader in clinical care, recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. Welcoming approximately 10,000 babies into the world each year in our hospital, we combine a strong focus on gynecologic and obstetric services with a comprehensive array of services for men and women, including cardiology, geriatrics, urology, bariatrics, and our Bone and Joint Center.
UPMC Magee isn’t just a great place to receive care: It’s a fantastic place to start or grow your nursing career. We support a solid nursing practice through evidence-based practices and a model of care centered on knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief.
Our Nursing Education staff leads new nurses through a yearlong Nursing Residency Program. The Nursing Residency program supports new and experienced nurses in developing competence and confidence in nursing practices, with the goal of advancing through the My Nursing Career development program. My Nursing Career rewards and recognizes nurses for their valuable committee contributions and professional growth.
We consider our professional staff nurses to be leaders. Our Shared Leadership Structure supports growth, nurse engagement, and collaboration, focusing on our Professional Practice Model. Working at UPMC Magee has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling career decisions I have made. Join us for the chance to work with a team that’s dedicated to treating every individual with dignity, empowering nurses through education, eliminating disparities in health outcomes, and bringing comprehensive care to our entire community.
The Professional Practice Model at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital represents the core beliefs we embrace each day as we care for our patients.
Each patient's needs are a priority in nursing care — as are the needs of their loved ones.
We firmly believe that patient and family involvement in care improves patient outcomes. Our nursing model fully supports engaging patients and families, treating them as if they were our own loved ones.
Our community is our home. Staff members donate endless hours and skills to causes that are vital in building community strength.
We provide care in neighborhoods that need it the most.
Nursing practice respects the cultural and personal needs of all who come to us.
Diverse people come together as one at UPMC Magee, which is a beacon to all, including our staff.

Magee first achieved Magnet® designation in October 2019. And now, our journey continues as we show our commitment to being a Magnet hospital.
The tenants of Magnet remain the same:
To our nurses: Your role in our journey to re-designation is to keep providing sterling, compassionate care to our patients.

This University of Pittsburgh program seeks to honor outstanding nurses for their kindness, warmth, and excellence in patient care.
Our hospital committee sends nominees to Pitt's oversight committee for a program-level award for nurses that work in a range of roles, including:
The DAISY (diseases attacking the immune system) Foundation® honors the skillful, compassionate care that nurses provide each day.
At Magee, we take part in the DAISY Award program to honor and thank our nurses for their outstanding care. There's also a DAISY Team Award.
The team award goes to those on a nurse-led team. It honors two or more people who go above and beyond to learn and meet patient and family needs.
Each quarter of the year, our Magee selection committee reviews DAISY award nominees from patients, family members, and staff. Nurses can be nominated through an online form, or nomination cards can be filled out at Magee near the elevators.
We then present the award to one or more nurses for their excellence in patient care.
This quarterly award celebrates the dedication, commitment, and compassion of patient care support staff each day.
Join us in honoring some of the nurses who went above and beyond this year at Magee.
Rookie of the year

The Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service (ACES) honors staff who embody UPMC's five core values.
These life changers exceed the high level of service that our patients, members, and communities have come to expect from UPMC.
