Women's Health Tests

At UPMC, our women's health experts offer comprehensive testing to diagnose conditions that affect women and newborns.

• Amniocentesis Prenatal Test — Amniocentesis is a prenatal test that doctors recommend for some pregnant women before they give birth.
• Annual Gynecologic Exam — An annual gynecologic exam is a physical exam where the provider (usually a gynecologist) also looks at the health of your reproductive system.
• Apgar Test — This test will quickly measure your baby’s physical condition and any potential need for immediate medical care.
• Bilirubin and Jaundice Testing — Elevated levels of bilirubin can cause jaundice and are tested for within 24 hours of birth.
• Eye Prophylaxis — Soon after birth, a nurse will place medicated eye ointment in your baby's eyes called eye prophylaxis.
• Fetal Echocardiogram — A fetal echocardiogram is an ultrasound test that assesses your baby’s heart structures and function.
• Genetic Testing and Counseling — Genetic testing can tell if you're predisposed to getting a disease based on your genes.
• Intravenous Pyelogram — An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is a test doctors use to help diagnose and stage certain cancers.
• Metabolic Screening — Metabolic screening will test your baby for several harmful and potentially fatal disorders that don't show signs or symptoms at birth.
• Pap Smear — A Pap smear test is a way to look for cells in your cervix that may be cancerous or pre-cancerous.
• Pelvic Exams — A pelvic exam is a physical exam of the organs around your pelvis.
• Prenatal Ultrasound — A prenatal ultrasound, or pregnancy ultrasound, is a safe way to monitor the health of your fetus and your pregnancy.
