Deborah Aschheim spent 2022 getting to know UPMC Mercy Pavilion peer counselors, patients, caregivers, and providers. Through this engagement she created portraits of members of UPMC’s dynamic vision and rehabilitation community. The portraits are located in clinical corridors on the fourth level.

Aschheim creates public art installations, sculptures, drawings, and social media projects. Her practice combines drawing and storytelling, and her recent projects about memory and place are based on intensive community engagement.
Her video and light installations replicate the fragile, intimate lattice of neural networks. She has worked with doctors and scientists in the Neurology Department at University of California, San Francisco, to try to understand memory and forgetting in the brain.
