LaJuana F. grew up with strong women who helped shape her into a lifelong caretaker. As a child, she watched her grandmother devote hours to helping others in her church. Her mother was “something like the neighborhood social worker,” always doing something for someone else.
It’s no surprise that Lajuana went on to volunteer in a hospital – and began a career in caring that led her all the way to her current role.
“I do believe that I have a higher calling to help other women like me,” she says.
As director of Women’s Imaging at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, LaJuana is there for women who are dealing with a wide variety of emotions about their tests and results. She always keeps that in mind, working with a higher level of sensitivity.
For LaJuana, her job comes down to what she can do to help her patients – and doing the right thing for them.
“At the end of it all, it’s not about us,” she says. “Everything we do has an effect.”
In addition to her in-hospital role, LaJuana regularly volunteers in the community with organizations that provide support services for women and families.
