If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 and have only mild symptoms – and you do not have difficulty breathing – you can schedule a COVID-19 test at a designated test location. The Emergency Department is NOT the place to get a COVID-19 test UNLESS you are experiencing breathing problems or other severe symptoms.
Going to an Emergency Department with mild or no symptoms may create a long wait time for you to be seen and COVID-19 test results do not come back more quickly – they still will take one, two, or more days.
For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For immediate help with a mental health crisis, call 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Our ER offers state-of-the-art technology and patient and family-friendly features, including:
Each room has a TV.
The waiting room offers a relaxing area for ER patients and family members and allows staff to streamline patient check-in.
When you arrive, a greeter will meet you. ER staff will triage you right away and then take you to a treatment room.
After we triage you and take you to a treatment room, we will register you from your bedside.
Located on the rooftop canopy above the ER, the heliport provides quick elevator access for medical transport.
The ER at UPMC St. Margaret has its own air handling system, which protects the rest of the hospital from possible contagions.
The decontamination area:
We have 2 private rooms for patients and their loved ones to discuss sensitive details of care with a doctor.
The ER at UPMC St. Margaret uses telemedicine to help assess stroke patients and give timely treatment.
This system uses high-tech, two-way video chat to link experts at the UPMC Stroke Institute to our ER doctors. The stroke experts assess the patient’s condition and suggest the best treatment.
