UPMC in central Pa. offers ImPACT baseline concussion testing for athletes ages 10 and up.
Baseline testing provides a measurement of verbal and visual memory, as well as brain processing and reaction time, when the athlete is not experiencing symptoms from a concussion. The ImPACT tool produces a baseline symptom score, which is compared to the test’s score after a concussion occurs. The test is the most effective tool in comparing a person's neurocognitive state before a concussion occurs.
UPMC in central Pa. is a Certified ImPACT Consultant (CIC) and offers testing at multiple locations. The test is computer-based and takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Baseline concussion testing age recommendations:
In the event that an athlete has a suspected concussion, the baseline data will be used as part of the post-injury physical exam conducted by a concussion expert. The ImPACT test alone does not diagnose a concussion, but it is an effective tool used to compare the data from an athlete’s non-concussed (“normal” state) to their post-injury state.
The test is also a factor used in determining the plan of care for active treatment and return to activity. Patient safety is the priority when dealing with concussions.
UPMC in central Pa. offers discounted ImPACT concussion testing throughout the year for individuals, as well as for local sports teams and organizations. Please call 717-791-2620 for more information.
