- Direct Patient Care (Pharmacy Consult Services & Ambulatory Care).

Electives
Residents will select three elective rotation blocks from:
- Academia.
- Ambulatory Care.
- Hematology/Oncology.
- Nephrology.
- Perioperative Care.
- Pharmacy Informatics.
- Sterile Product Preparation.
- Substance Use Disorders-Withdrawal Management Unit.
- Transitions of Care – Internal Medicine.
- Trauma/Burn.
Residents may also elect to complete a third critical care rotation (ICU3, ICU8, or Emergency Medicine) not completed as a core experience.
Off-site electives at UPMC Hospitals outside of UPMC Mercy may also be available contingent on outside preceptor availability.
Residents may also electively enroll in the Mastery of Teaching program sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh.
Requirements for Program Completion
All residents at UPMC Mercy must:
- Obtain Pennsylvania pharmacist licensure within 120 days of the residency’s start and practice 35 weeks (i.e., two-thirds of the year) as a licensed pharmacist.
- Attain a rating of “Achieved for Residency” for at least 80% of the objectives established by the residency program as outlined in the ASHP Accreditation Standards for a Postgraduate Residency Programs.
- Complete the requirements of the individualized quarterly training plans as developed by the RPD.
- Complete all required learning experiences.
- Complete all required staffing assignments (36 weekend shifts, 32 weekday evening shifts, three holiday shifts).
- Complete a major project and medication use evaluation (MUE); prepare a project manuscript and MUE poster; and present the project at Pharmacy Resident Research Day.
- Meet the residency presentation requirements: five formal presentations, two journal club presentations, and one interdisciplinary meeting presentation.
