Barb W. has a passion for caring that began when she was growing up in Pittsburgh. As a teenager, she volunteered at a senior care home. She would take the patients on walks, talk and listen to them, and support them. If they had no family, “I would make them feel like I was a part of their family,” Barb says.
Today, Barb does the same thing for UPMC patients in her role as a housekeeper. She connects with people and tries to make their stay as positive as possible.
“I’m just a people person,” she says. “I keep the same expression with everyone I meet. I want to make everyone feel good.”
Barb says the patients motivate her to do her job well every day. If a patient is lacking something, she’ll go out of her way to get it.
“I’m here to make patients feel comfortable and like they’re at home,” she says.
