Life Changing Is … Making Someone’s Day

Darius Balthrop – Supervisor, UPMC Koala Café

From his childhood, food played a big part in Darius Balthrop’s life. He bused tables in his grandparents’ restaurant, and he learned to cook from his mother. Today, he’s a self-described “foodie” who likes to try new restaurants.

That passion for food drives Darius in his role as supervisor of the Koala Café at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Whether it’s providing warm and welcoming customer service or ensuring someone’s dietary needs are met, Darius goes out of his way to help others. If a family is having a bad day, he listens to and supports them.

“What we do can really change people’s days,” he says.

Darius enjoys connecting with the people who visit his café. He knows the smallest gesture can make someone’s experience better – even if that’s whipping up a patient’s favorite kind of milkshake.

“To be able to uplift their spirits in whatever they’re going through, that’s one of the main reasons I get up every morning to be here,” he says.

At UPMC, Life Changing Medicine means putting a smile on someone’s face.
